I have a question…. or two…
1. Who are the three most influential artists on your career?
2. What do you think of Paul Klee?
3. What do you think of Barnett Newman?

Those are tough questions. I will do my best to answer.
1. I think earliest most influential were Van Gogh, Rothko and Frankenthaler. But I appriciate so many more. I love Shozo Shimamoto and Gerhard Richter 🙂
2. Paul Klee reminds me of Picasso. Not sure why but sometimes they both sort of scare me and that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate their talent.
3. I really like Barnett Newman. And he reminds me of Mr. Rothko. Newman’s quote “It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way not his own way “is darn hard to do. But we keep trying.
Did my best to answer, and thank you for asking. Best

I love the fact that they called Helen (Frankenthaler) too poetic and too sweet. But I dare anyone to look at a seriously crafted painting like “Nepenthe” for example and find her poetry and sweetness anything other than wonderful!!
And as for Newman’s quote on painting, I actually disagree. One of the profound things about art is how our vision sometimes ends up being profound to others in ways we could never plan for. The spectator more often than not, if they are truly open to the power of art, often see what is profound in their own experience reflected back at them, and to have them swoon of their own accord takes nothing away from my intentions. I have HUGE respect and love for Barnett Newman’s work, but I truly feel that if a Chinese viewer, for example, sees something beautiful/unique to his/her experience, while a Tamil viewer sees their inner conflicts represented…they are both right, and my work (no matter what I meant it to be) is realized in ways I cannot myself create. Even if the viewer is bored and unimpressed, those are still emotional states, any emoting is better than none I guess! 🙂
Then again, it is not like I am an artist anywhere even remotely near/like geniuses like Newman or Frankenthaler… LOL!! I don’t (can’t?) even use color!
